TRAVEL DIARY: ESSAOUIRA PART ONE

December 27, 2014

Essaouira in Morocco is Marrakech’s laid back, boho little sister.  Only about 2 hours drive west from the capital, it is a picturesque fishing town with a big kite surfer following.  We spent our first three days at Riad Baoussala, a hotel about 10 minutes drive away from Essaouira itself.

Riad Baoussala is a little slice of heaven on a plate.  It is small and friendly yet chic and stylish.  I got pretty obsessed by the pool and that blue wall (you’ll see what I mean) but there are also countless little corners and terraces to drift off to if you want to avoid other guests.

Once we had collapsed by the pool, we barely moved for three days.  For part deux of our stay, we were headed to Essaouira itself so we didn’t feel the need to go and explore it straight away.  We wanted to relax and Riad Baoussala provide the perfect place to do just that.

I have to also mention the food which was always delicious.  Baoussala is owned and run by a French woman, Dominique and there were distinct French elements to the food especially at breakfast.  We could chose from a range of fresh salads at lunch and for dinner we had some of the best tagine I have ever tasted which we ate in the setting of a beautiful, candle lit courtyard.

The best part of Riad Baoussala is the price.  Prices start from about £60 per night which makes this place unbelievably good value.  I didn’t want to leave but after three glorious days, it was time to jump in a taxi and head for the town.
